Magical Motu

Suitable for year-round travel | Spectacular in autumn and spring | Grade 3 – Intermediate

This three-day escape invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and savour the best of Tairāwhiti Gisborne’s backcountry. Beginning in the historic village of Motu, the route unfolds over 120 km of quiet rural roads, where rolling hills, wide horizons, and the occasional wave from a friendly local set the tone for the journey ahead.

Visit the tumbling Motu Falls, through the welcoming settlements of Motu and Matawai, and on to the sparkling waters of the Rere Rockslide and Rere Falls – both local treasures and favorite stops for travelers. From there, you’ll explore the awe-inspiring Eastwoodhill Arboretum, the National Arboretum of New Zealand, home to the largest collection of Northern Hemisphere trees in the Southern Hemisphere.

Each day offers the perfect balance of natural beauty, gentle adventure, and indulgence. Between rides, you’ll enjoy the flavours of the region, with opportunities to sample wines from some of Tairāwhiti Gisborne’s most celebrated vineyards.

Whether you prefer the comfort of a fully supported experience, the insights of a guided group, or the freedom of independent travel, this journey promises a memorable blend of scenery, culture, and taste – from the high country of Motu to the sunny coast of Gisborne.

Start and finish in vibrant Tairāwhiti Gisborne.
